This was a very exciting week for the Torrey team as we went 5-0 and won the 3A Division of the Lions' Tournament for the first time in my years at LJCD.  More on the tournament in general later.
On Thursday, we faced a scrappy Morse team in the semi-finals, and pitched superbly again.  Mac Anderson threw 4 scoreless innings to earn his second win of the year, and Ian Lutz gave up only one run through 3 innings to earn the save.  Sam Ayala (3 hits including a towering homer) and Dustin Hughes (2 doubles) led the charge offensively.  We also played fantastic defense with 18 assists including 2 key double plays turned by Brian Trausch and Tommy Edman.  Final score: 3-1 LJCD.
That game sent us into the championship game against Valley Center who started an old friend of ours (Shonta Chaloux) in left field.  Jackson Volle (freshman) got his first varsity start on the mound and pitched brilliantly.  Jackson gave up just 2 (unearned) runs through 4 innings en route to his first varsity win.  12 different Torreys contributed at least one hit to our team high 19 hits on the game.  Tommy Edman had 3 (2 doubles).  Anthony Torres, Dustin Hughes, Roman Valenzuela, Michael Glatt, and Frankie Brown each had two. Glatt and Hughes each drove in 3 runs, and Dustin Hughes hit his third home run of the year.
Freshman, Dustin Hughes earned tournament MVP honors, going 8-16 with 2 homers, 2 doubles, 10 runs batted in, and a save on the mound.  Anthony Torres and Sam Ayala also had impressive tournaments.  Torres was 8-14 with 4 RBI, while Ayala was 7-14 with 2 homers and 5 RBI.
The Torreys are now 11-3 and ready for a well deserved break after playing 9 games in the last 11 days. We will play La Jolla High School on Friday, April 9 at LJCD.
